Getasew is a 16 year old boy studying at Macmillan Academy in Addis Ababa. He had a wonderful sponsor for the past 2 years and that sponsorship took Getasew from the 6th to the 8th grade. We now need a new sponsor for him. His expenses are listed below.
Why did we choose Getasew out of the 80 million people in Ethiopia?
His story is compelling. Getasew is from the tiny village of Fiche Saminchiwa. He grew up in a mud house with his parents and six younger siblings. They had neither electricity nor a toilet. He traveled hours to go to school, often sleeping on the floor in a small shared room so he would be close to his studies.
Getasew suffered from severe kyphoscoliosis for years and consequently lost 40% of his lung function. Even with such a disability, he continued to go to the countryside school. Thanks to Rick Hodes and the JDC, Getasew now stands straight and tall after having surgery in Ghana, and is a healthy young man (please go to rickhodes.org for information on how to help others like Getasew with their surgical needs).
Getasew had many fans after his recovery…he was loved by all who met him. One volunteer arranged with Making the Grade, to bring him to Addis to attend a good school. With his help, we have been able to take this young man from primary school to high school, his grades increasing each semester.
We do not want to send this young man back to the countryside where his education will end. We need help to keep him in Addis, in his school. This year he will take his 8th grade national exams. We need 4 years of sponsorship for him. The costs are listed below…
